According to the legend, the goddess Zhinü and the god Niulang fell in love with each other passionately, but their love was forbidden by the Heavenly Order. Zhinü, the granddaughter of the Queen Mother, was punished and condemned to work day after day in cloud weaving. Niulang, the deity of agriculture, was banished to Earth, where he spent his life as an orphan, mistreated by his brother and his wife. Niulang was accompanied by an ox, which was actually a degraded cattle deity. It was with his help that the couple finally found each other, got married and brought two children into the world - a son and a daughter. The Queen Mother, having learned about the meeting, took her granddaughter to her place and separated the couple with a river of stars (the Milky Way). Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, a bridge formed by magpies forms over the "brook". The magpie bridge connects the Lovers on this special day.
